Are there different concrete mixes?
Yes, choosing the right concrete mix is essential if you want the best results for your project. We can supply you with concrete of the perfect strength and have the ability to manufacture ready mix concrete of various grades and with preferred qualities.
Concrete 101 – the basics
At its most basic level, all concrete is made up of three core elements: water, cement and aggregates. However, whilst every concrete mix contains these ingredients, altering these ratios can dramatically affect a mix’s overall workability and strength once cured.
For example, adding more water to a concrete mix will increase the size of the slump and flowability, however, it will also reduce the compressive strength of the concrete.
Concrete admixtures
As well as altering ratios for different effects, there are a number of additional chemical and non-chemical admixtures that can be added to a concrete mix in order to alter the properties of the mix and finished product. Common examples include:
Water-reducing - reduces the water content required in a concrete mix by between 5-10%. This means that more durable concrete can be created without increasing the amount of cement used.
Retarding - slows down the rate at which a concrete mix cures. Retarding agents are especially useful for negating the adverse effects of laying concrete in hot weather.
Accelerating - speed up the rate at which a concrete mix cures. Accelerating agents are useful for those running to a very tight deadline.
Fibres - synthetic fibres are sometimes used in concrete mixes to improve durability and impact strength.
There are many other types of admixture available and at The LGW Group we have the knowledge to recommend, manufacture and deliver the best possible concrete mix for your specific project. Contact us today to discuss your requirements on 0117 958 2090.
