Metal decking FAQs

Metal decking is corrugated metal sheeting used either as a composite floor system or to support a built-up roof system. It is typically made of galvanised steel and is held up by a series of beams or joists.

Because it’s lightweight, quick to install, and strong enough to support heavy loads, metal decking is a key building component in many commercial and multi-storey constructions.

Composite steel decking is metal sheeting combined with concrete and a reinforcement, such as steel frame or steel fibres.

This combination creates a lightweight, cost-effective floor structure that doesn’t need to be supported by props.

Unlike regular steel decking, untopped steel decks don’t have reinforced concrete slabs placed on top.

This style must have a horizontal span of less than 40 feet with span/depth ratios less than or equal to 3 to 1.

Some of the many advantages of steel decking include:

Speed of construction: Steel decking can be installed quickly, reducing overall construction time.

Affordable: Steel decking is a cost-effective way of constructing floors and roofs.

Lightweight: Steel decking is lightweight, making it easier to handle and transport.

Fire resistance: Because steel is flame-resistant, metal decking can help prevent the spread of fires in buildings.

Durability: Steel decking is durable and can withstand heavy loads, making it a good choice for large multi-storey structures.

Sustainability: Steel decking is fully recyclable and reusable.

Steel decking is usually made out of galvanised steel, a type of steel that’s been coated in a protective layer of zinc. The zinc blocks oxygen and water from reaching the underlying metal. Galvanised steel will rust eventually, but the zinc should protect it for decades.

A metal deck typically spans between 3 – 4.5 metres (10 – 15 feet) for a standard profile of 5 – 7.5 centimetres (2 – 3 inches). A dovetail profile, however, can span up to 6 metres or 20 feet.

You’ll normally need to spend between £5.00 - £15.00 per square foot of decking. However, the total amount you’ll need to pay depends on the complexity of the decking, your building’s layout, where the decking will be placed, and a number of other factors.

If you’d like to know how much the decking you have in mind will cost, don't hesitate to book a consultation. We’re happy to discuss your requirements and provide you with a more precise estimate of how much you’ll need to pay.
